Excerpt: I’m about to call everyone over when the front door swings open and in walks a modern-day Adonis in athletic gear. Sweet mother of god. What fresh hell is this? Why would the universe torture me this way? Like this weekend isn’t already going to be hard enough?

My mouth has gone dry at the sight of him. Casual khaki cargo shorts hang low on his waist, and a light blue Under Armor t-shirt hugs toned arms and hints at six-pack abs. His athletic calves are accentuated by his sports socks and Nike shoes.

The scruff around his chin does nothing to diminish the dazzling smile that pulls across his face when he sees Jimmy and Tanner, embracing each of them in a “bro” hug. And good lord, is that a dimple? Dimples are my kryptonite. I want to crawl into the cheek divot and camp out there for a week.

Trailing behind this guy will probably be some supermodel with perky breasts and the kind of smile you see in a toothpaste commercial. With my luck, she’s on vacation from her two jobs: posing against turquoise waves for a swimsuit catalog and exploring nuclear fission to solve the world’s energy crisis. Any guy who looks remotely that hot has got to have someone amazing by his side.

I realize my initial reaction to him is purely physical. How could it not be? My sweaty palms and slack-jawed mouth have to be part of an autonomic response. Like breathing.

I’m secretly hoping he has a weird voice, or his nose whistles when he exhales, or his breath is so horrendous, nearby flowers to wilt. No such luck.

“Hey, man. Great to see you. So glad you could come. Where’s your buddy?” Jimmy asks.

“He couldn’t make it,” the mystery guy replies in a deep, warm voice that makes me so woozy I lean my hand on the table to steady myself. He sounds like warm honey and I immediately drift to a wholly inappropriate fantasy of him licking the viscous amber substance out of my belly button. While he’s focused on his conversation with the guys, I glance at his moss-colored eyes framed by impossibly long eyelashes. He looks like one of my modern-day romance cover models—a cross between athletic heartthrob and boy next door. I watch, rapt, as he introduces himself to Kendra. She chats breezily with him. I’m careful not to drool as he makes his way over to me.
