Please welcome today’s featured author, Caroline Warfield. She’ll tell us about herself and her books.
Who am I? I’m a storyteller. I’m also a grandmother. Several years ago we relocated to the east coast to be near our one and only grandson, and found a comfortable place near him with a wonderful room I call “The Solarium,” in which to write. It has nine windows and overlooks a patio, bird feeders, my vegetable garden, inside what I call the deer fortress, and a long stretch of grass. There is a long narrow park with a creek running through it a block away and so we also have wildlife. At one time or another we’ve watched red-tailed hawks remove a squirrel from our yard, foxes trot across the patio, a skunk, a coyote, ground hogs, chipmunks, crowds of squirrels and herds (and I do mean herds) of deer. I once counted nineteen distinct species of birds at my feeder in one day.
None of that is what I expected. When we moved to the urban wilds of Eastern Pennsylvania I expected to be in a concrete jungle filled with grey walls and graffiti. I had no idea spring would be lush, green, and full of flowers. Don’t get me wrong; the population is dense and traffic is horrible, the crime rate climbs, parts of Philadelphia are gritty and even dangerous, and the downtown leans toward shabby. BUT That is balanced by world-class art museums, astonishing science museums, priceless historical treasures, and spectacular public gardens. We even have four massive shrines and two saints of our very own.
It turns out to be a terrific place to write, and a great base for travel because that’s the other thing I am, a traveler. I’m a pilgrim through life find inspiration for stories everywhere I go. I write historical romance set in the Regency and Victorian era. One day I asked myself if I could write a Regency set in Rome. Turns out I could, and it is my best selling book. There followed ones set in Venice, Constantinople, Ottawa, Canton, I’m currently writing a Victorian set in Cairo. Stay tuned.
The Unexpected Wife ~ Children of the Empire book 3, The Duke of Murnane expects work to heal him. He doesn’t expect to face his past and find his future in China
Blurb: Charles Wheatly, Duke of Murnane, accepts an unofficial fact finding mission to the East India Company’s enclave in Canton, China on behalf of the queen. He anticipates intrigue, international tensions, and an outlet for his grief over the death of his young son. He isn’t entirely surprised when he also encounters the troublesome offspring of his mentor, the Duke of Sudbury, but the profound love he discovers for the determined young woman is unforeseen and untimely. Charles certainly doesn’t expect to also face his troubled marriage in such an exotic locale. The appearance of his estranged wife in the company of their enemy throws the entire enterprise into conflict, and tensions boil over when the woman he loves is put at risk by his wife’s scheming—and the beginnings of the First Opium War.
Zambak Hayden seethes with frustration. A woman her age has occupied the throne for over a year, yet the Duke of Sudbury’s line of succession still passes over her—his eldest—to land on a son with neither spine nor character. She follows her brother, the East India Company’s newest and least competent clerk, to Macau to protect him and to safeguard the family honor—if she also escapes the gossip and intrigues of London and the marriage mart, so much the better. She has no intention of being forced into some sort of dynastic marriage, and she may just refuse to marry at all. The greed and corruption she finds horrifies her, especially when her brother succumbs to the lure of opium. She determines to document the truth. When an old family friend arrives she assumes her father sent him. She isn’t about to bend to his dictates nor give up her quest. Her traitorous heart, however, can’t stop yearning for a man she can’t have.
As an epic historical drama unfolds around them, both Charles and Zambak must come to terms with a love that neither expected.
