Okay. I admit it. I am a cowardly lion. I am a chicken. I am the one who hates watching scary movies because later I hear each and every creak in the house. When I was a kid, I saw a movie—I have no idea which one—where a woman looked out a window into the dark and a face came right up to the glass. To this day I don’t look outside through a window at night. When I was in grade school I wrote a mystery as a class assignment and scared myself so much I knew—I just knew—that writing was not something I would ever do. As for Halloween, if I’m home alone, I really don’t do well with trick or treating. I mean consider, if you were a serial killer, what one night of the year would you be certain people would open the door without even checking, and not care if you’re disguised as Jack the Ripper?? I’m cautious as well as cowardly.
So why, you might ask, did I ask to be part of Mystic Desire, an anthology of paranormal and supernatural stories? Good question. I realized that there would be ghosts, vampires, witches and such in the book, and that I would not only have to write a paranormal story but read the others eventually. I guess the reason I asked not only to be in the anthology but relished the writing and reading is because I trusted my fellow authors. I knew that the stories would all be for the purpose of romance, and that made all the difference.
Actually, I can now read scary stories (I still can’t watch scary movies and fast-forward through parts where my heart rate speeds up), and some of them in Mystic Desire are worthy of being called spooky. My stories (I have two, one under the name Anne Krist) include a psychic and a ghost. The first, An Awareness of Evil, is a little suspenseful and a bit woo-woo. The second, Life Saving, is—to me—a bit sweet, with a hint of romance and a little something supernaturally special. I hope you enjoy both of them. I know you’ll enjoy Mystic Desire as a whole because there is something for everyone—vampires, angels, witches, and lots of good old fashioned magic! It’s perfect for the Halloween season.
Mystic Desire is a collection of short paranormal romance stories. This is a chance to read and discover the work of a diverse group of very talented authors.
The themes in this book are varied, as are the collection of characters and artifacts, including Native American dream catchers, mystical jewelry, and characters such as lustful vampires, hot warlocks, a grumpy leprechaun, a ghostly terrier, a zombie apocalypse and things that go bump in the night.
From soft and tender love to hot passionate, kinky sex, there is something for everyone in this anthology.

About Dee S. Knight: A few years ago, Dee S. Knight began writing, making getting up in the morning fun. During the day, her characters killed people, fell in love, became drunk with power, or sober with responsibility. And they had sex, lots of sex. Writing was so much fun Dee decided to keep at it. That’s how she spends her days. Her nights? Well, she’s lucky that her dream man, childhood sweetheart, and long-time hubby are all the same guy, and nights are their secret. I’ve always loved scary movies and reading books that get the heart pumping. My first scary movie was Poltergeist. I still remember my brother sitting on the stairs outside the room while I watched it. I think I was around 7 years old.
I enjoyed both your stories in Mystic Desire. I’ve been wondering who Anne Krist was. *lol*
Rue, I was half asleep when I saw your note with the link to this post or I would have sent this comment right away: thank you so much for hosting me today!
Hi Dee,
I must say I love horror movies. I seem to be able to watch a movie, and no matter how scary, have no lasting side effects. The only exception to that is The Exorcist which gave me nightmares for a long time, maybe years, after. Your stories in Mystic Desire were great. I can’t give away the end of An Awareness Of Evil, but it was a very clever twist.
Hi, Suzanne. Thanks! I’m so glad you enjoyed An Awareness of Evil!
Dee, great blog post and thank you Rue Allyn, for hosting. This is a lovely blog area.
I love Dee’s stories. I agree, I never was a horror fan, did the whole Nightmare on Elm Street. I do like Stephen King, as an author, so really into supernatural, just not the jump out of your seat stuff. I loved being a part of this anthology, I think it is a great collection of stories.
Ric
Ric, I loved your story in Mystic Desire! And I also love and appreciate being in this anthology–it’s a great book!
This made me smile. I don’t like the spooky stuff either, but I can look out a dark window. Snort.
My husband loves horror movies, and that’s all that’s on right now.
I take comfort in knowing Hallmark is launching their Christmas line-up early this year! That’s my love, of course, romance!
Gibby, I know!! I hate in a way that Christmas stuff is starting so early but I do look forward to Hallmark’s and Lifetime’s holiday movies. And I watch them year after year! You and I can stick together on this. 😉
I like scary movies, but my husband will not let me watch them, on the basis that I will a) grab him halfway and squeeze him so hard it hurts whilst screaming b) have nightmares for weeks on end. But I love all the stories in the anthology, especially yours, Dee!
Thanks, Alice, for liking my stories! Jack works nights, so I don’t watch scary movies because I spend most nights here alone–and I hear EVERYthing that creaks or groans or goes bump.
Rue and Dee,
Great blog.
Dee I agree with you. I can’t watch scary movies either. At 17 I was taken on a date to see the ,Night of the Living Dead. It was in a room full of men on a college campus. And they laughed their way through the movie while I sat their scared to death. Ever since I have had zombie nightmares. I have however read a few King books since then and was brave enough to read, Mystic Desire, for the same reason as you. I trusted the other authors that were involved. I’m not all the way through yet and I did skip one at first, but I have been loving what I’ve read so far.
Callie
Callie, I know I’m part of the anthology but I’m being objective when I say it’s a really great book.
It seems contradictory, but I can watch Investigation Discovery channel–and that has real monsters. But actual scary movies? I’m with Gibby watching Hallmark Christmas, lol.
