My love of sunsets has nothing to do with the symbolism of ends and beginnings. Nor do sunsets memorialize a specific occasion in my life. I do not know when my passion for the dying sky began. This love seems to have always been with me, an essential part of me. My fondess for the setting sun may be unique in its intensity and constancy, but admiration for the sunset is universal.
Key West, a tourist mecca, has a long-standing tradition of celebrating the sunset. Travel blogger Barbara Weibel explains:
Just before sunset each night, acrobats, jugglers, musicians, cyclists, and animal acts begin arriving at the waterfront boardwalk in Old Town’s Mallory Square, where Duval Street meets the Gulf of Mexico. As the golden hour approaches, locals and tourists alike congregate, stuffing their bellies with fast food and shopping bags with trinkets while the acts are busy setting up. Soon, the first performer is hawking to the crowd. https://holeinthedonut.com/2009/05/01/key-west-florida-sunset-tradition/
However, I have never limited my time watching the sun dip below the horizon to a single place. My current home in Nicaragua does provide some prime viewing opportunities and I’ve begun taking pictures every night of the beautiful light show nature provides. Here’s my series from yesterday, October 23, 2018.
Note, I start watching before the sun is down and linger to the last little sliver can be seen. Perhaps I’ll make a book about my year of sunsets. I travel a lot, and it might be fun to see the day’s end from a variety of geographical perspectives. If I do make the book, most of the images will be from home, where I’m gifted, once nearly every twenty four hours, with a gorgeous and inspiring sky. What do you think? Should I make that book or are there too many sunset collections available.?
The graphics are memorable, but if I were to do such a book because I’m an incurable romantic, I’d have an accompanying photo of a man or a woman or a couple with an expression that can be interpreted in a thousand ways. Okay, not so easy to do, but you did ask? Who’s pining for who and why can’t they be together again. Enjoy your day.
I did ask, Sandra, and I thank you very much for the feedback. Adding a paragraph long story with character pics to each sunset might prove an interesting romance collection. I may kick this idea around with the Belles. Loved hearing from you.
