Feeling a bit silly now that the danger was past, she took the dagger in one hand the key in the other hand and walked to the door. She turned the key and stepped back.
The door flew open, banging against the wall. A priest strode inside. Another man, a giant, followed him. Angry at their invasion, she drew herself up ready to send them away. Then the priest lowered his hood.
The snippet above and those in the weeks to come are from Knight Errant. The scene relates the first physical encounter between our heroine, Lady Juliana, and her sworn enemy, Fra Basit, a very influential priest, whose mission is to erradicate anyone he considers a heretic. Juliana has been in his sights for several years, so she’s extra cautious when she thinks he might have found her.
