Welcome to What’s the Story Wednesday. Today’s guest is author Jude Knight who brings us the story behind Regency Era hero Captain Jack Wrath from Jude’s novella Love in Its Season, from the Bluestocking Belles with Friends collection Under the Harvest Moon. @JudeKnight, @BluestockingBelles #ReadaRegency.
In Jude Knight’s Love In Its Season, two people who believe that love has passed them by find that the harvest season of 1815 is their time for love.
About Love In Its Season: The Battle of Waterloo lost Jack Wrath the use of one arm and ended his career in the cavalry. With nothing better to do and nowhere else to go, he sees his doctor home to Reabridge—and stays because of Gwen, the female farrier he rescues from a lustful lord. After all his years of wandering, Gwen’s cottage feels like home.
Gwen Hughes is taller and stronger than many men, and runs her own business. Perhaps she intimidates the men of the town, but that is fine with her. She doesn’t have time for courtship. She’d be a fool to refuse Jack’s offer to help her father, who is in his second childhood, and even more of a fool to read too much into his kindness.
Interviewing Captain Jack Wrath: Good Morning Jack. It’s late, you are bored. What do you do?
I can’t abid idleness. I’ll look for some work. Perhaps something to repair or a person in need of assistance.
What sort of meal might you purchase if you were hungry and not at home?
Some kind of pie. Preferably one with lots of meat.
What kind of clothing do you prefer to wear?
I have been in uniform for so long that I find myself uncomfortable in civilian clothes. Eventually I will no doubt prefer a loose shirt and waistcoat, trousers, boots, and a coat made to fit without being too tight. I’m not fond of cravats. Most likely I’ll make use of a neck-scarf and definitely a cap rather than a bowler or top hat.
Do you know how to fix things?
Most certainly. I must confess that I feel compelled to fix problems whether with things, events, or people.
Do you like children?
I like children and for the most part children like me. I won’t push a child into an acquaintance he or she is not ready for. I try to provoke their interest by, for example, making a puppet play with a handkerchief around my fingers. I listen to them, and will go out of my way to amuse them.
What are you like first thing in the morning?
I most often wake up cheerful, which is a bit annoying for those who wake slowly and reluctantly.
How does you behave when in a “proper” social situation?
I usually feel a bit out of place, but I work at being charming to cover my discomfort.
Do you have a valet or do you take care of yourself?
I prefer to do for myself.
Necktie/cravat or open shirt?
Open neck shirt. When I must wear formal dress, I remove my cravat off as soon as possible.
Sleeves buttoned or rolled up?
Rolled up in good weather, but I’m usually out of doors wearing a coat and working with the horses as much as I can be.
Powdered wig or natural hair?
Natural hair, most definitely.
Carriage or horseback?
Horses for certain. At present I am riding a borrowed horse. The last mount I owned was shot out from under me at Waterloo
